DVLA 'runs road tax evasion clampdown in Glasgow'

Date: 9/3/2010
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) is running a campaign in Glasgow, Scotland, to ensure motorists do not try to avoid paying road tax.The campaign notes that wheelclamping regularly takes place in the city to remove vehicles that have not been taxed from its streets.
A total of 3,200 untaxed vehicles were taxed in the city last year, while 1,000 were crushed or shredded.
A total of 7,200 untaxed vehicles were also clamped in Manchester during this period.
Drivers are also reminded that it is easier than ever to pay the levy as payments can be made online and over the phone.
Those whose vehicles are found to be untaxed face a £100 release fee if their vehicle is clamped.
If a valid tax disc cannot be produced, £160 must be paid before the vehicle is unclamped.
DVLA's head of wheelclamping Bethan Beasley commented: "The message is clear if motorists do not want their vehicles to be clamped, towed or crushed, they must have a valid tax disc displayed if their vehicle is kept or used on the road."
