East Croydon train station upgrade to begin on Christmas Day

Date: 30/11/2011
Upgrades will soon begin at East Croydon train station in a bid to ease congestion at the transport hub.Cranes will be used to remove sections of a now unused Royal Mail conveyor belt on December 25th and 26th in preparation for the installation of a new footbridge.
This will mean commuters will no longer have to use ramps and the concourse to move between platforms, making the interchange more efficient.
Lifts will also be installed to provide alternative access to the footbridge.
East Croydon is the 14th busiest train station in the UK and the initial work will take place around Christmas to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum.
Mark Ruddy, Network Rail's Route Managing Director for Sussex, said: "The improved station will play an important role in the regeneration of East Croydon, creating better links for the community and businesses."
London's Farringdon station is also undergoing redevelopment work and Network Rail recently won gold at the Green Apple environment awards for its sustainable approach to the project.
