Edgware Road Tube Station to battle pollution

Edgware Road Tube Station to battle pollution

Date: 27/9/2011

One of the new pollution-reducing measures announced by Mayor of London Boris Johnson includes a new 'green wall' at Edgware Road Tube Station.

The 'green wall' is expected to be in place by November and will consist of approximately 180 sq m of vegetation.

It is hoped that the trees and plants will help minimise the amount of pollution emitted from the transport infrastructure in London.

Mr Johnson announced this and other initiatives on World Environment Health Day and Transport for London (TfL) noted that the PM10 pollutant - which mainly comes from traffic emissions - could be reduced by between ten and 20 per cent.

The measures all fall under the Department for Transport-backed London Clean Air Fund, which will finance other measures such as promoting eco-driving courses for taxi and minicab drivers.

Owners and operators of HGVs, coaches and buses were recently urged by TfL to make sure they take action now to meet emission standards that will be in force from January 2012.
