Edinburgh City Council plans changes to traffic movement

Date: 14/3/2013
Edinburgh City Council has revealed that it is considering a raft of potential changes to traffic controls in the Scottish capital in order to make certain areas more accessible to pedestrians. The aim is to boost local businesses and encourage footfall through measures such as redirecting bus routes and taxis - as well as creating fresh cycle lanes.
Under the proposed scheme, bus services would run eastbound on George Street and westbound on Princes Street, while general traffic - including taxis - would run in an eastbound direction only on George Street.
“The challenge is to make sure we cater to everyone's needs and encourage people to come into the heart of the city by enabling them to choose a variety of ways of travelling there, whether it's on foot, by bike, in their car or by using public transport like trams, taxis and buses,” said Councillor Lesley Hinds, Transport and Environment Convener.
With Edinburgh’s new tram network set to begin operating by summer 2014 at the latest, transport in the centre of the capital could be set for more radical changes given the Council’s latest proposals.
