Edinburgh OAPs set to benefit from free tram travel

Date: 8/2/2013

Edinburgh's pensioners are set to benefit from free tram travel under plans unveiled by the city's Councillors.

The move forms part of the Council's attempts to integrate the tram network - which is due to start operating in the summer of 2014 - with the city's existing bus service.

"We are determined that Edinburgh residents who are eligible for free travel across the country should be able to use the tram on the same basis," said Transport Convener Councillor Lesley Hinds.

"The tram needs to be wholly integrated into the national transport network."

Councillors will now assess the most effective ways to fund the initiative in a move that has been praised by the Scottish Government.

Indeed, the Government provided £500 million worth of support to the tram project, and the recent developments mean that disabled residents and those aged over 60 will enjoy free use of the network once it is operational.
