Edinburgh taxis 'may increase baseline fee' for late travellers

Date: 3/5/2013
Residents and visitors in Edinburgh could be facing higher taxi fares for travelling after midnight, the Scotsman reports. The proposed move would see the implementation of a system similar to that in Glasgow, which operates three time-dependent baseline fees for travellers using the city's black cabs.
In a council document designed to review Edinburgh's taxi network, it was suggested that a higher tariff for using the service between midnight and 5am could be introduced.
According to Raymond Davidson, Secretary of the Edinburgh Taxi Association, the idea behind the proposals is to encourage more drivers to work later hours and cater for the number of travellers looking to use cabs in the city after nights out.
"The reason behind it is to give drivers a bit of an incentive to stay out later and help get revellers home," he explained.
"We don't yet know how much it could be raised by but I don't think it would be a huge increase."
