Egypt announces plans to upgrade ports and railway links

Date: 20/12/2011
A study is to be conducted into transport in Egypt to assess ways of establishing better links between the east and west. The country's Transport Minister Dr Galal al Saeed explained Japan has been commissioned to conduct a survey on the nation before plans can be drawn up.
These are likely to include proposals to link ports in the Red Sea and Mediterranean via roads and railways between Sokhna and Al Dekhaila.
In a speech read by Head of Sea Transport Major General Hamaed Hedaya, the minister also said Egyptian ports will need to be upgraded and services improved to ensure they are capable of accommodating larger ships and tankers.
It is hoped that eventually, the African nation could become a pass out area for goods travelling between the east and west.
This comes just after Engineering News reported Toyota South Africa Motors has moved its road transportation network to rail in a bid to lower logistics overhead costs and reduce its carbon footprint.
