Electric car-sharing schemes 'could boost low-carbon vehicle uptake'

Date: 15/3/2012
Schemes that enable people to hire out electric cars could support the growth of the low-carbon vehicle sector, it has been suggested.Alastair Ramsay, Sustainable Development Manager at Legrand, explained this kind of initiative is "imperative" for uptake of these motors.
He was discussing a recently-launched project in Glasgow, which enables people to hire electric cars, scooters and bikes, as well as providing them with free parking.
Mr Ramsay said the move was not unexpected, as car sharing schemes have already proven to be fairly successful in the UK.
He continued: "The introduction does though create an important avenue for the growth of electric vehicles, one without which their widespread adoption may not even be achieved."
The expert suggested many people are interested in electric vehicles and sharing initiatives give them the chance to try them out before they make a commitment, although there needs to be an increase in the number of public charging points.
