Electric cars 'are here to stay'

Electric cars 'are here to stay'

Date: 9/11/2011

One expert believes electric cars are a vital component in the fight to make the UK's roads more environmentally friendly.

Alastair Ramsay, Sustainable Development Manager at Legrand, said there is "little doubt that the electric vehicle (EV) is here to stay" and by 2020, 20 per cent of new motors could be EVs or plug-in hybrid cars.

He noted domestic transport accounts for 20 per cent of Britain's CO2 emissions and 90 per cent of this is produced by cars.

Because of this, electric vehicles are "key to the government's environmental objectives," Mr Ramsay continued.

However, the expert believes "safe and economic" ways for people to charge the cars at their own home need to be developed and battery technology must be improved if the motors are to really take off.

Earlier this month, Environmental Manager at Bestival Duncan Turner said the music festival is committed to sustainability and is looking to make its transport provisions greener as a result.
