Electric cars 'will thrive' in cities

Electric cars 'will thrive' in cities

Date: 16/3/2012

Cities are the perfect place for electric cars to develop and grow in popularity, it has been suggested.

Sustainable Development Manager at Legrand Alastair Ramsay claimed urban landscapes will provide "fertile ground" for this type of motor due to the nature of travel in built-up areas.

Furthermore, electric vehicle hire schemes would reduce the cost of daily commutes for many people and give them an alternative mode of transport at a time when buying and running a car is very expensive.

However, away from cities take-up of these eco-friendly motors is likely to be slower, he suggested.

"Not least because of still unanswered anxieties over range, purchase cost, the requirement for dedicated charging points and their associated costs," Mr Ramsay stated.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders recently claimed the government needs to continue with schemes such as the Plug-In Car and Van Grant, as these will encourage electric vehicle uptake among businesses and individuals.
