Electric vehicles 'will soon be common' in London

Electric vehicles 'will soon be common' in London

Date: 28/6/2010

Mayor of London Boris Johnson has pledged that electric vehicles will become popular in the city.

As Transport for London (TfL) brought four new electric Mitsubishi i-MiEVs into its fleet, Mr Johnson emphasised his dedication to greener transport.

"Very soon electric vehicles and the apparatus needed to support them will be a common sight on London's streets," he declared.

TfL already plans to have as many as ten vehicles running on electricity by the end of this year and 1,600 charge points are planned for London in coming months.

According to the schedule, there will be 7,500 charge points in 2013 and 25,000 by 2015.

Londoners will also benefit from facilities including a website to help them find their nearest charge point.

Other innovative technology was unveiled by TfL last week in the shape of digital countdown timers for pedestrians, which tell people how long they have to wait until the traffic will be stopped for them to cross the road.
