Emergency services lend support to Road Safety Week

Date: 24/11/2010
A number of awareness-raising activities are being organised by emergency services that are lending their support to Road Safety Week. The annual event is organised by charity Brake with the aim of highlighting dangers such as speeding.
Those involved include West Mercia Police Service, which is giving assemblies on road safety at a number of primary schools, as well as holding a poster competition.
Michael Sturland, an Officer with the unit, said: "Getting young children involved like this and teaching them about the dangers on the road is an important message and we hope to encourage children to think about their own safety."
Elsewhere, Kirklees Fire Service is launching a week of activities in Huddersfield, including a pedestrian and cycle training course in schools.
Brake's main message for this year's Road Safety Week is the need to slow down to 20 mph when driving in urban areas, which Campaigns Director Julie Townsend stated is one of the best ways of protecting children.
