Employer sets zero-road accident target

Date: 17/3/2011
Employees at one of the biggest maintenance and service providers in the UK are aiming to drive safely so the company can achieve its goal of recording zero road accidents.Enterprise Managed Services has already successfully reduced its claims for incidents of this nature by almost £500,000.
As a result, it has joined the Driving for Better Business campaign run by RoadSafe as part of the Department for Transport's Driving for Work strategy.
Initially, Enterprise set itself a target of a 15 per cent reduction in accidents across all of its operations and it now plans to improve on this by fitting more vehicle speed limiters in its fleet, along with introducing telematics positioning systems, among other measures.
Alison Moriarty, the firm's Health and Safety Manager, says: "Enterprise believes that the most important lesson to be learned from its experience in managing the safety of employees who drive for work, is that it is vital not to look at road safety in isolation from the way the company manages other health and safety issues."
Peter Rodger, Chief Driving Examiner at the Institute of Advanced Motorists, recently called on employers to do more to encourage road safety among their workforce.
