Employers 'should be encouraged to focus on road safety'

Employers 'should be encouraged to focus on road safety'

Date: 16/3/2011

Road safety is an important issue that charities, employers and the government should all focus on.

This is the opinion of Peter Rodger, Chief Driving Examiner at the Institute of Advanced Motorists, who says ministers need to find a way to increase society's involvement in ensuring they become better motorists and cyclists.

In addition, he claims the voluntary sector should be encouraged to do more to visibly motivate people to stay safe on the roads, along with urging employers to do their part - particularly if their employees are required to get behind the wheel at any point.

Mr Rodger adds that as for individual car owners: "One of the things they ought to do is some form of professional development in terms of their driving and not assume that once they have passed the driving test, that is all they [will] need to do for the rest of their lives."

A recent report from the Transport Select Committee included the proposal of making the current driving test more thorough in an effort to reduce accidents.
