EU 'must encourage sustainable transport'

Date: 1/12/2011
Transport policy in the European Union (EU) must acknowledge the important environmental role trucks and buses play both socially and economically, it has been claimed.Alfredo Altavilla, Chairman of the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) commercial vehicle board and Chief Executive Officer of IVECO, discussed the matter at ACEA's annual conference on EU transport policy in Brussels.
He claimed European nations need to reduce their dependence on oil and "decarbonise" their economies.
"Unfortunately, we do not have the power of magic to give us immediate solutions. But our industry will further lead in delivering the mobility solutions of tomorrow," Mr Altavilla stated.
The expert also welcomed the European Commission's decision to encourage debate regarding the future of sustainable transport on the continent.
However, he said Europe is a challenging environment for vehicle manufacturers.
The adoption of sustainable transport is being encouraged in the UK, as the government has launched an industry-led taskforce to support the use of low-carbon HGVs in towns and cities.
