EU regulation on bus and coach passenger rights comes into force

Date: 4/3/2013
New EU regulations designed to enhance passenger rights on bus and coach travel have come into force, outlining the obligations of companies and terminal managers in regards to customers. The laws are similar to those which govern air, train and boat transport, and include a range of non-discriminatory measures.
Under the new regulations, passengers will also have the right to a specific level of reimbursement in the case of overbooking, cancellation or delay in their journeys.
"We have kept our promise: thanks to this regulation EU passenger rights are also extended to bus and coach transport," said European Commission Vice-President Siim Kallas, who is responsible for transport.
"The EU is now the first area in the world with a full set of passenger rights for all modes of transport."
With an estimated 70 million passengers travelling by coaches and buses in the EU every year, a substantial number of citizens are set to benefit from the protection the fresh legislation provides.
