EU rules for bus and lorry drivers may be changed

Date: 5/4/2011
Lorry, bus and coach operators have been informed of a proposed new set of rules from the European Union (EU).Roads Minister Mike Penning revealed that the current regulations governing the licensing of hire and reward operators have been amended and the implementation of the updates is a subject that has now gone under consultation.
The changes have taken place ahead of December, when all member states will be required to draw up a national register of these operators.
In the UK, such a list already exists, the Department for Transport points out - and ensures that drivers use the country's roads safely and legally.
Mr Penning said: "These new EU measures will help to level the playing field for UK operators by making sure that there are effective mechanisms in all member states to allow enforcement agencies to report illegal activity by foreign vehicles."
He added that he hoped the proposals being put forward by this country will allow the operator licensing system to be strengthened, without creating a burden for the industry.
Last month, the government proposed that some lorries in the UK be allowed to tow longer trailers, in order to transport more lightweight goods in one container and thereby reduce carbon emissions.
