EV charging network launched at motorway service stations

Date: 28/7/2011
Motorway service stations across the UK will now have charging units for electric cars in an effort to boost the long-distance travelling capabilities of the vehicles. The posts, which have been launched by Ecotricity, will be powered via wind and solar parks, making them 100 per cent green energy alternatives.
According to the organisation, this development has cured one of the main stumbling blocks with purchasing electric motors - range anxiety.
Now vehicles should be able to make a continuous journey from London to Edinburgh using the charging stations, which Ecotricity Founder Dale Vince says is important for getting the country's "electric car revolution moving."
"This marks the beginning of the end for the old combustion engine," he stated, adding that increasing oil prices will only hasten its demise.
Last month, Transport Secretary Philip Hammond announced that the Renault Fluence had become the tenth electric car to be eligible for a consumer grant that allows owners to claim up to £5,000.
