Every residential area in Lancashire 'will have a 20mph limit'

Every residential area in Lancashire 'will have a 20mph limit'

Date: 31/8/2010

All residential regions in Lancashire will have a 20mph speed limit by 2013, it has been claimed.

Geoff Driver, Leader of Lancashire County Council, made the statement after city councillors raised concerns about road safety at a meeting, according to the Lancashire Evening Post.

"We're being practical and we're saying to people we will have 20mph areas throughout every residential area by the end of this administration (May 2013)," he said.

Mr Driver added the Conservative Party is committed to improving road safety and the council has had its budget for this sector increased.

Councillor Neil Cartwright, Preston's Cabinet Member for Development and Community Safety, commented the local authority, which was previously led by Labour, had resisted past proposals of 20mph restrictions.

A recent study conducted by Road Safety Analysis found children who live in deprived areas are more likely to be injured in a road accident than those from affluent locations, with youngsters from Preston being five times more likely to be involved in an incident than children in Kensington and Chelsea.
