EVs 'offer benefits to city residents'

Date: 14/9/2011
There are benefits to be enjoyed if people residing in cities choose to invest in an electric vehicle (EV).Alistair Rhead, EV Manager at Mitsubishi Motors in the UK, said that the availability and viability of this type of car is something the general public is becoming increasingly aware of.
Speaking at EcoVelocity 2011 last week (September 9th), he claimed that the main question that motorists want to know is whether the automobile will fit into their lifestyle, adding that those living in London who own one have the advantage of avoiding the congestion charge.
Mr Rhead continued: "The benefit to city drivers is that the distances that they travel day-in, day-out might mean that EVs fit into their lifestyles easier.
"I do think cities are key as people are commuting into smaller areas and average journey lengths might be smaller."
Businesses are also coming around to the benefits of EVs, according to the expert - who noted that such cars are slotting into corporate fleets.
Looking to the future, Mr Rhead said that by the end of 2011 he hoped that not one day would pass without him spotting an electric automobile on the road.
Transport for London recently announced that a dedicated charging network will be installed around the sites of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which will be integrated into the Mayor of London's Source London infrastructure once the sporting events are over.
