EVs 'will undoubtedly play vital role in countries' eco plans'

Date: 7/7/2011
It is likely that electric vehicles (EVs) will form a significant part of countries' targets to reduce their carbon emissions in the years ahead.Such is the suggestion made in a report by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), which notes that a demographic of green consumers will help sustain the popularity of the cars.
This is despite the fact that the Group believes that conventional internal combustion engines are improving in their ability to reduce carbon emissions.
Indeed, it notes that the technology is showing potential for cutting 40 per cent of tailpipe output of CO2 at a cost that is lower than was believed three years ago.
Xavier Mosquet, a Senior Partner and Global Co-Leader of BCG's automotive practice and lead author of the report, says that EVs are expected to gain "modest ground" in the market during the lead-up to 2020.
Overall, he notes that petrol and diesel-powered cars will "continue to dominate the global landscape" due to their fast pace of improvement, although EVs will "undoubtedly play an increasingly large role in many countries' plans in the decades ahead as energy independence and environmental concerns intensify."
According to recent comments by Lem Bingley, author of the Greenmotor.co.uk blog, 2011 has been the first time in which UK consumers have had the chance to invest in EVs that are well-engineered and developed.
