Date: 21/2/2012
Blackfriars Underground station has been reopened and can now accommodate 60 per cent more passengers. The site has been redeveloped and expanded over the course of three years and up to 2,000 people were working on the project at any one time.
As well as improved access thanks to additional lifts and escalators, there is a new entrance hall and the number of trains that pass through the station will triple.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: "An incredible amount of hard work and expertise has been invested in these improvements and Blackfriars is now set to become a truly world class station."
The work is part of a wider redevelopment programme on the tube network and national rail stations and both Thameslink and London Underground services can now be accessed via Blackfriars.
Improvements have also been taking place at Farringdon station, which is set to become London's newest transport hub.
