Expert calls for summer car safety checks

Date: 26/7/2010
Motorists are being advised to prepare for their summer holiday if they are travelling by car.Chief Executive of GEM Motoring Assist David Williams said more holidaymakers may opt to reach their destinations by car this year following disruption from volcanic ash and strikes by airline staff.
"It is extremely important that drivers realise the necessity to ensure their car has been completely checked before setting off on a long journey," he added.
Mr Williams noted a breakdown can be extremely frustrating when the car is full of excited family members eager to reach their destination.
Furthermore, the specialist also urged motorists to read up on the various laws for motorists throughout Europe.
Road safety experts from GEM observed individuals should carry out a range of inspections on their vehicles prior to setting off on a journey, including brakes, lights, wipers, oil, tyres and water levels.
Last week, Steve Crosthwaite from the Highways Agency stated motorists should take a few minutes to check weather and traffic conditions before they embark on a road trip.
