Extension to rail network planned in Dubai

Dubai is already home to the largest driverless rail system in the world and now the emirate plans to broaden its train lines further.

Zawaya.com reported that the rail network in Dubai is set to be extended to cover 250 km by the next decade - a significant increase on the 75 km it currently serves.

Under the plans revealed to the Khaleej Times - and cited by Zawaya.com - by Matar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai, new metro and tram lines will both be added.

He told the publication that the alterations to the transport network form part of a revised master plan, which is designed to "fit into the changing scenarios."

"In the future, we will add more metro and tram networks to the existing ones, creating a network of around 250 km," Mr Al Tayer stated.

Last September, the United Arab Emirates National Transport Authority signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Unife - the Association of European Rail Industry relating to the exchange of information in the railway sector.
