Failing eyesight 'poses alarming risk to road safety'

Failing eyesight 'poses alarming risk to road safety'

Date: 27/9/2010

The degenerative eyesight of older drivers is extremely dangerous for road users, according to one expert.

Andrew Howard, Head of Road Safety at the AA, said it is "vital" motorists over 55 know the symptoms of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), after a survey revealed 55 per cent of drivers over this age know little or nothing about the condition.

The research, which was conducted by Novartis Pharmaceuticals UK to mark AMD Awareness Week, found 45 per cent of respondents have never discussed their eyesight in relation to driving safety with their optician.

Mr Howard stated it is very important that people do so, while he also urged older people to have regular eye checks.

"This study reveals an alarming risk to the safety of people on the roads," he remarked.

The Argus recently reported that Sussex Police have launched an initiative named Operation Eyesight, which aims to raise awareness among motorists that their sight may have deteriorated with age.
