Farmers 'can contribute to road safety'

Date: 25/8/2010

Farmers can improve road safety by taking a number of simple steps, a Herefordshire councillor has suggested.

Brian Wilcox, Herefordshire Council's Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation, has been handing out leaflets informing agriculturists what their statutory duties are on the roads, the Hereford Times reported.

"By taking simple measures such as ensuring hedges do not obstruct road signs and preventing mud from being left on roads, farmers can make the countryside a safer place for all of us," he said.

Mr Wilcox added the leaflet is an important means of reminding people of their responsibilities and offering them advice on how they can contribute to reducing road incidents.

The pamphlet, which is produced in partnership with highway contractor Amey, was distributed by the council's road safety team at a recent Hereford cattle market.

Earlier this month, Dr Anthony Beresford of Cardiff Business School commented the road safety message is being taken on board by the majority of people in Wales, according to WalesOnline.
