Farringdon 'on course to become London's newest transport hub'

Date: 9/2/2012
Work is continuing to turn Farringdon station into London's newest transport hub.The site's London Underground entrance was recently closed for eight weeks during the expansion of the Grade II-listed building.
So far, new ticket gates have been introduced, along with additional staircases, a footbridge, more ticket machines and new entrances.
Further improvements are to come and Farringdon will provide links to Heathrow, Gatwick and Luton airports, as well as connections to St Pancras International for Eurostar services.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: "By the time of the Olympics, this station will also be fully accessible with five new lifts and before too long, Crossrail will interchange here too, making millions of journeys easier for passengers."
Network Rail Project Director for Farringdon Richard Walker added that by 2018, more than 140 trains will run through the station every hour following further improvements to the Thameslink route.
Last year, Network Rail won gold at the Green Apple environment awards for its eco-friendly approach to the upgrades.
