Date: 23/7/2010
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service has been praised for its efforts in preventing road traffic crashes. It has become the first emergency service to become a champion for Driving for Better Business.
The aim of the initiative which was set up in April 2007 - is to persuade employers to focus on road safety for those who drive as part of their job.
Deputy Chief Fire Officer Chris Anderson said the scheme helps to raise awareness of road safety among enterprises and the public sector.
"It also highlights the operating efficiencies to be gained as a consequence of implementing the good practice measures identified through the process," he added.
The service has a number of safe motoring policies that cover a range of issues, including driving for operational proposes, implementing safety in all activities and risk assessing journeys.
Furthermore, each staff member who gets behind the wheel has a personal file that lists their driving history.
