First air-conditioned tube trains arrive

First air-conditioned tube trains arrive

Date: 21/10/2009

The first air-conditioned London Underground trains have arrived in the capital ahead of their use next year.

By 2011 it is planned that 58 trains on the Metropolitan lines will benefit from the new technology.

London mayor Boris Johnson said that the arrival of the new train was a "milestone" in the rebuilding of the tube network.

He went on to highlight the opening of the new East London line and the cycle hire scheme as other exciting ventures in the city.

After the Metropolitan line has received its new trains, additional air-conditioned services will be added to the Circle, Hammersmith & City and District lines.

By 2012, Transport for London intends to have vastly improved the capital's transport network.

Extra capacity is being added to the Victoria, Jubilee and Northern lines, while the Docklands Light Rail will be getting new trains and extended stations.
