Fleets urged to be more aware of cyclists

Fleets urged to be more aware of cyclists

Date: 2/3/2012

Fleet operating firms are campaigning for changes that will help protect vulnerable road users such as cyclists.

Organisations such as Environment Agency and Cemex have been discussing the issue at the annual Best of the Best Fleet Safety Forum Conference.

They want to see best practice measures introduced by fleet operators, recommending that large vehicles are fitted with blind spot mirrors and safety cameras.

This idea supports a safety campaign from Brake, which is encouraging these changes through its Cycle for Life initiative.

Development Manager at the group Roz Cumming said: "Brake applauds the important steps being taken by fleets to protect vulnerable road users and we'd urge others to follow that lead."

Some 150 individuals from the fleet sector attended the conference, which was sponsored by Aviva.

Last month, figures published by Accident Exchange revealed lorries from overseas were 'at fault' in one in every 31 motorway accidents between December 2010 and the same time the following year.
