Forth bridge construction 'on schedule'

Date: 3/2/2010

The construction of the new Forth bridge is still on schedule despite the economic downturn, according to Transport Scotland.

The government agency noted the cost of the project is likely to be £2.3 billion and will be complete by 2016.

Interim project director John Howison told Holyrood's transport committee the construction could start next year if it is approved by MSPs.

He added that he was confident about hitting targets.

The bridge is to be 2.7 km long and will link Edinburgh and Fife.

Commuters have also been asked for their opinion on proposals to make the Forth Road Bridge car-free.

The closing date for submissions in February 27th.

Green MSP for Glasgow and committee convener, Patrick Harvie, said: "The government's plan to create a public transport corridor on the existing Forth Road Bridge, if parliament approves the additional bridge, have widespread implications for the public transport infrastructure of Edinburgh, Fife and other geographical areas."
