Four Zambian authorities team up to tackle road safety

Date: 11/1/2012
Several authorities in Zambia have signed a new memorandum of understanding to promote road safety in the country. The agreement involves the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA), Road Development Agency (RDA) and the National Roads Fund Agency (NRFA), as well as the police force, the Times of Zambia reports.
Speaking during the signing ceremony yesterday (January 10th), Inspector General of Police Martin Malama explained the four organisations will conduct roadside inspections, night patrols and combined highway patrols to improve safety and prosecute offenders.
He explained the institutions will also work together in an attempt to reduce accidents using their combined advantages.
While the police are spread across the nation and the RDA can improve networks, "RTSA has got the data base for the motor vehicles on our roads and driver's information [and] NRFA has direct access to the national fund," Mr Malama added.
Zambia is not the only African nation making efforts to improve road safety, as at the end of last month the Tanzanian police force received video cameras worth Sh30 million (£12,344) to monitor highways, the Citizen reported.
