FSF Chairman calls on football clubs to invest in public transport

FSF Chairman calls on football clubs to invest in public transport

Date: 15/5/2013

Following a study which ranked Premier League football teams in terms of the ease with which fans can get to their stadiums, (FSF) Football Supporters Federation Chairman Malcolm Clark has called for clubs to invest in public transport to improve accessibility.

Mr Clark's comments come after research conducted by the FSF and the Campaign for Better Transport found that Newcastle United's St James' Park is the most reachable ground in the top flight of English football, while Manchester United's Old Trafford came in 18th.

"Fans go to enormous lengths to see their team play home and away," the Chairman said. "It's far easier to commit to that level of support if public transport to games is accessible and affordable.

"The FSF would like to see clubs and transport authorities working together to offer fans genuine travel options."

With fans making 39 million journeys to support their teams every season and 23 per cent of these spending more on travel than they do on tickets to games, Mr Clark said that clubs could help make match day experiences more convenient by playing their part in improving transport.
