Fuel import restriction EDM tabled

Fuel import restriction EDM tabled

Date: 6/3/2010

Liberal democrat shadow transport secretary Norman Baker has tabled an Early Day Motion (EDM) asking the government to restrict the amount of fuel hauliers can bring into the UK, it has been reported.

Mr Baker stated that the fuel limit for transportation into the country should be put at 100 litres per vehicle.

He stated that some hauliers transport large amounts of fuel into the UK through the Channel Tunnel and on ferries for the purpose of avoiding UK fuel duty charges.

Mr Baker stated that this practice creates a potential fire risk.

He tabled the EDM at the request of industry campaigner Peter Carroll, according to Road Transport news service.

Mr Carroll told the publication: It raises a genuine safety concern, but has the added feature that it addresses the issue of foreign hauliers coming into the UK with cheap fuel. "

So far, the EDM has been signed by 18 MPs.
