Glasgow 2014 spectators urged to avoid driving

Glasgow 2014 spectators urged to avoid driving

Date: 17/6/2013

Organisers of next summer's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow have urged spectators not to drive as it is set to be a car-free event.

Indeed, with no parking facilities anywhere near the venues, people are being asked to use public transport - or walk or cycle - in order to reach their destinations.

Speaking to the Scotsman, John Fryer, Head of Transport for the Games, said: “The strategy is based on a public transport games. In London, there was a similar approach, which was delivered very well. People who drive will not get close to the venue and we recognise there is some education to do."

With as many as 180,000 people expected to attend events each day during the Commonwealth Games, Glasgow's authorities have been working to ensure the necessary improvements are made to the city's transport infrastructure in order to cope with the influx.

What's more, Scotland is also preparing for the thousands of visitors expected to descend on Gleneagles for next year's Ryder Cup, with the focus being based on getting people to and from the golf club.
