Glasgow subway revamp given go-ahead

Date: 19/4/2010
A £290 million plan to update the Glasgow Subway has been given the green light. The plan includes an initial facelift of the stations, as well as proposals for the introduction of driverless trains. Smart ticketing and improved disabled access were also highlighted in the plans.
Extended opening hours on the underground transport system were also put forward in the plans. Currently the subway has limited operating hours on Sundays. These, as well as the evening opening hours, may change as a result of the upgrades.
Besides this, services could become more frequent.
Chairman of the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) Jon Findlay told the BBC: "SPT's plans are realistic and deliverable and have been backed by business leaders, local and national politicians and the public."
More than 30 years have passed since the last major upgrade to the Glasgow Subway.
There are 15 stations along the six-mile long subway system.
