Google Maps now offering London public transport directions

Date: 29/7/2011
Public transport directions in London are now being offered through Google Maps, which could see more people switching to such services as a green alternative to driving. The news was announced on the Official Google Blog, with the company noting that it will be an important feature for the one billion passengers using buses and the Underground in London each year.
According to the search engine, the new service will allow users to click on Get Directions between two destinations and then choose a train icon, which indicates public transport routes.
The update will also be available for people with smartphones as part of Google Maps for mobile, with individuals benefiting from an added extra that calculates their current location in relation to their destination and offers services nearby.
Recent Transport for London statistics showed the capital's bus system carried more passengers over the last 12 months than at any time in the preceding 50 years.
