Government announces £40m fund to boost cycling safety

Date: 4/4/2013
Transport Minister Norman Baker has unveiled a £40 million fund to make the nation's roads safer for cyclists, with an emphasis on improving dangerous routes and road junctions. With plans to make the money available at 78 separate locations across the country, the aim is to have all of the projects completed within the next 12 months.
Mr Baker said that the initiative will help to increase safety for cyclists and encourage more people to take up the activity.
"This is part of the £107 million investment we have announced in cycling infrastructure over the last year, over and above the £600 million we have invested through the Local Sustainable Transport Fund," he added.
And Road Safety Minister Stephen Hammond further highlighted the benefits that the fresh round of funding will have in protecting cyclists, as well as the importance of tackling the dangers that have the potential to compromise people's wellbeing on roads.
