Government commits £500m to electric vehicles

Date: 19/7/2013
The government has committed £500 million of transport funding to ensure that Britain becomes a world leader in electric vehicle technology.Announced in wide-reaching transport plans published by Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin this week, the package should provide a significant boost to low-carbon travel across the country.
It should help to create jobs in the sector, reduce carbon emission from vehicles and ensure that air quality is improved.
Other areas affected by the £28 billion investment include motorways and A-roads, which will undergo their biggest ever upgrade. For example, 221 extra lane miles will be created in areas of the north-west, Birmingham and London.
"Today's changes will bring an end to the short-term thinking that has blighted investment in England's roads so that we can deliver the infrastructure our economy needs,” said Mr McLoughlin.
“Backed by the Government's £28 billion commitment, they will give us a road network fit for the 21st century and beyond."
