Government 'is committed to rail improvements in the north-west'

Date: 8/11/2010
The coalition is committed to improving conditions for rail passengers in north-west England, Transport Minister Theresa Villiers has said.Ms Villiers toured Merseyside's rail and underground network today (November 8th) and discussed upgrading works with local transport leaders.
She stated the government's dedication to passengers in the region is evidenced through its approval of major track improvements to reduce journey times between Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds, as well as the funding it has made available for the electrification of the Liverpool to Manchester line.
"Improving and upgrading our railways is a key priority," Ms Villiers remarked, adding this means future investment must be used in such a way as to maximise the benefits for passengers and value for money for the taxpayer.
Transport Secretary Philip Hammond recently commented now is an important time for rail travel, after announcing the government has sold the rights to run Britain's first high-speed railway for £2.1 billion.
