Government launches UK Sourcing Road Map

Government launches UK Sourcing Road Map

Date: 3/3/2011

A new Automotive Council report this week has revealed that there are many parts and products that car manufacturers would like to source from a UK supplier but are currently purchasing from elsewhere.

According to the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills, the domestic market does possess the capability to potentially meet this demand.

In order to help with this, it has launched the UK Sourcing Road Map - a tool that the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has welcomed, claiming it identifies where the opportunities lie for boosting the strength of the country's vehicle supply chains.

It suggests that as much as 80 per cent of automotive components that are needed during the assembly of vehicles in the UK could be purchased from local suppliers.

Meanwhile, Business Secretary Vince Cable said: "[The] Automotive Council report shows for the first time where the opportunities are, the parts that vehicle manufacturers want to source here in the UK if they have the choice and where the UK has capability to supply those parts."

The Automotive Council is a joint industry and government body, set up to address issues such as the growth of the country's supply chain.
