Government publishes new motorbike helmet safety ratings

Date: 26/11/2010
New safety ratings for motorcycle helmets have been published ahead of the Motorcycle Show in Birmingham next week.Road Safety Minister Mike Penning announced an additional 16 models have been analysed by the Department for Transport's Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme (Sharp).
He said he was "delighted" to make known the new ratings before visiting the Motorcycle Show, urging those attending the event to visit the Sharp stand.
It is estimated that 50 deaths could be prevented each year if all riders wore the safest headgear available, Mr Penning explained.
He added safety can be improved for motorcyclists if they have access to the best information and further training, while the number of accidents on Britain's roads can also be reduced if drivers are reminded of the need to look out for bikes.
In addition, experienced rider Darren Fawthrop advised bikers to always wear the correct protective gear, when speaking to the Halifax Courier recently.
