Government unveils funding for 4 new railway stations

Date: 16/5/2013
Four locations in the UK are set to benefit from new rail stations as the Department for Transport sets about managing the investment of £37 billion to modernise the nation's railway network between 2014 and 2019.Transport Secretary Partick McLoughlin revealed yesterday (May 15th) that the Government's New Station Fund will be used to help finance the projects, each of which was awarded millions of pounds worth of support after bidding for funding earlier this year.
Newcourt in Devon, Lea Bridge in Waltham Forest, Ilkeston in Derbyshire and Pye Corner in Ebbw Valley are the four areas that will see the creation of brand new stations in the coming years following the Secretary's announcement.
"Funding [these] new [stations] illustrates our commitment to working with community and national partners to meet local transport needs that not only deliver real benefits to passengers but also improves the network," Mr McLoughlin said.
"This is another example of the Government's determination to transform the railways as we continue to push forward with the biggest programme of rail investment ever."
The Pye Corner project will receive £2.5 million to support the construction of a single platform equipped with a help point and ticket machine, while the Newcourt initiative will benefit from £1.5 million worth of funding.
Lea Bridge is set to be awarded £1 million to pay for a scheme worth more than £6.5 million, while Ilkeston will be in receipt of £4.5 million to help cover the cost of substantial work.
Indeed, Ilkeston is set to see the construction of two platforms able to accommodate trains up to six passenger cars long. Waiting shelters will also be built, along with a car park with 150 parking spaces and a taxi rank.
Ramp and step access will be included too, while automated ticket machines and customer information screens will support passengers.
