Government's sustainability plans 'still need more work'

Government's sustainability plans 'still need more work'

Date: 31/5/2010

The government needs to do more to encourage people to walk, according to one organisation.

Senior Everyday Walking Officer at the Ramblers Des de Moor said the coalition regime's plans to support sustainable transport schemes are a step in the right direction.

However, he stated that officials still have a long way to go, as many individuals do not venture out on foot because the environment is not very walker-friendly.

Mr de Moor explained more needs to be done to give people the confidence to walk or cycle.

He noted that a lot of cities are now more accessible and there are proposals to create a coastal path walk all along the river in Liverpool.

The specialist remarked: "There's things like the Trans Pennine Trail and there are various improvements in the city centre."

Measures in the government's new programme include plans for officials to join forces with local authorities and bus operators, as well as highlighting the benefits of using a bike and walking.
