Govt announces £15m sustainable transport fund

Date: 8/2/2012
The government is providing £15 million of funding to support sustainable transport projects in the UK.Transport Minister Norman Baker made the announcement yesterday (February 7th), explaining the package will support the £560 million Local Sustainable Transport Fund.
It is hoped the new funding will help to reduce carbon and promote economic growth by encouraging people to use eco-friendly methods of transport, such as cycling.
"If we are serious about reducing carbon, then we need to get more people walking and cycling," Mr Baker stated. "But we must do it in a way that boosts the economy."
While £8 million will be given to the UK transport charity Sustrans, the remaining £7 million will be distributed through the Cycle Rail Working Group.
Mr Baker claimed the government is committed to lowering carbon output - a view shared by Managing Director at Nissan Motor UK James Wright.
He recently welcomed the coalition's decision to introduce a plug-in van grant.
