Govt announces A164 Humber Bridge road improvements

Date: 3/4/2012

A multi-million pound road improvement project is to get underway in Yorkshire.

Transport Secretary Justine Greening has announced £10 million will be spent on improving the A164 Humber Bridge to Beverley route in East Riding.

The aim of the initiative is to reduce traffic congestion and make it easier for people to reach the International Hub and Humber Ports Complex, as well as make journey times more reliable.

Approval for the scheme was originally granted in the Autumn Statement last year and the road is scheduled to open in March 2013.

Ms Greening said: "This is a massively important road in East Riding and these improvements are going to make a big difference to local people and businesses."

Work to construct the Humber Bridge began in 1973 and the first traffic crossed it on June 24th 1981 before it was officially opened by the Queen on July 17th.
