Govt calls for contributions to A14 Challenge

Date: 14/12/2011
A new study has been launched by Roads Minister Mike Penning called the A14 Challenge. The purpose of the initiative is to make improvements to the capacity and congestion problems currently affecting the route between Ellington and Fen Ditton.
The minister is calling on road users to put forward ideas that make journeys along the key Cambridgeshire corridor safer and more reliable.
A £20 million funding package has also been established to create quick-fix measures to reduce the impact of incidents on the A14.
Mr Penning urged people to take part in the scheme, adding: "We do not believe that, on its own, a simple road building solution is likely to be the best option."
He said the contribution of local knowledge and understanding of the route will ultimately help to improve it.
Earlier this month, Non-Executive Chairman of the Highways Agency Alan Cook pointed out strategic roads handle a third of all traffic in the UK and two-thirds of freight vehicles, so it is vital they are properly managed by the government.
