Govt launches electric vehicle charge point map

Date: 15/11/2011
Sustainable transport could be made easier in the UK thanks to the introduction of a chart mapping charging points for plug-in vehicles.Called the National Chargepoint Registry, it will be publicly accessible so drivers can find the nearest place to top up their car.
Announced by the government last week, the initiative was accompanied by a new system called the Central Whitelist.
This means motorists do not have to sign up to new schemes every time they charge their vehicle in a different location.
Transport Minister Norman Baker said there is a "public appetite" for plug-in cars.
He added "low-carbon vehicles are here to stay" and the government will work with industry "to create a world-leading charging network that really reflects the needs of its users."
These comments echo those recently made by Sustainable Development Manager at Legrand Alastair Ramsay, who predicted that 20 per cent of new cars could be plug-in hybrids or electric vehicles by 2020.
