Govt pledges £12m for low carbon buses

Date: 29/5/2013
The (DfT) Department for Transport has announced £12 million worth of funding will be dedicated to delivering 213 low carbon buses on Britain's roads.Forming part of the fourth round of the Green Bus Fund, the measure is designed to cut emissions and encourage local authorities to adopt more environmentally-friendly vehicles to support public transport networks.
Indeed, since the initiative was introduced, four rounds of funding have seen £87 million spent on green buses, saving an estimated 28,000 tonnes of CO2 every year.
Local Transport Minister Norman Baker praised the growing prevalence of low carbon vehicles and highlighted the benefits of investing in such technology, revealing that there has been a strong interest in low emission transport since the Green Bus Fund was introduced.
"Buses are an essential part of people's day-to-day lives up and down the country and are a key tool for enabling economic growth," he said.
"At the same time, we want this growth to be green, which is why we are investing in these brand new low carbon buses."
