Govt urges Essex rail users to have their say

Date: 20/2/2012
The government is calling on rail passengers to give their views on the new Essex Thameside franchise.Rail Minister Theresa Villiers wants people to air their opinions on how train services in the local area could be improved as part of a 12-week consultation.
Depending on the results, stations in Essex could be upgraded, while more services may be introduced and smart ticketing technology considered for the county.
Ms Villiers said: "Over recent years, Whitehall has had too much say in the detail of the way trains are run. I don't believe that micromanagement is the best way to improve services for passengers."
Operators could also be given more of a say in the services they run, although the government will still control key routes.
According to research conducted by Passenger Focus, those travelling on the Essex Thameside franchise are among the most satisfied rail passengers in the UK, with London commuters being its most regular users.
